The Lorica Segmentata is the most iconic armour of the Roman legionary, first attested archaeologically in the early first century AD and in common use through the third. Constructed from overlapping iron strips (laminæ) articulated by leather straps and bronze fittings, it offered exceptional protection across the shoulders and torso while permitting a remarkable freedom of movement.
